Steven J. Sklar directs our firm’s tax practice. Immediately prior to joining our firm, he served from 2016 to 2022 as Vice President – Global Tax for John Wiley & Sons, a leading international publishing company. Prior to that, he served from 2015 to 2016 as Vice President Tax for Veeco, a global manufacturer of capital equipment, from 2009 to 2015 as Vice President – Global Tax for Sealed Air, a Fortune 500 global packaging manufacturer, from 2005 to 2009 as Chief Tax Advisor of Heyman Companies, a privately-held family concern that owned and controlled manufacturing companies, real estate, securities arbitrage trading and related businesses including ISP, a global specialty chemical manufacturer (sold to Ashland Corporation for $3.2 billion in 2011), and GAF, North America’s largest manufacturer of roofing and related materials. Before that, he was Senior Vice President – Global Finance – Tax Counsel & Project Analysis of MasterCard from 2000 to 2005 and Vice President – Finance, Planning of financial printer Bowne & Co. (merged with RR Donnelly in 2010) from 1997 to 2000. Before joining Bowne, Mr. Sklar was Vice President, Treasurer & Chief Financial Officer of NYSE-listed generic pharmaceutical leader Biocraft Laboratories from 1989 until 1996, when he led Biocraft’s financial team in its successful merger and integration with Teva Pharmaceuticals, where he served as Vice President – Finance from 1996 to 1997. Before joining private industry, he was a tax partner at Botein Hays & Sklar, a NYC law firm founded in 1866, where he practiced from 1981 until 1989. Mr. Sklar was a member of the tax faculty of NYU School of Law as an assistant professor from 1985 until 1987 and as Adjunct Professor from 1987 until 1999; previously, he was an Accounting Instructor at The Wharton School of Finance of the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Sklar holds a B.S. in Economics (Magna Cum Laude) and a Masters in Accounting from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, a J.D. from Columbia University School of Law and an LL.M.-Taxation from New York University School of Law. He was elected to Beta Alpha Psi both as an undergraduate student and as a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, honored as a Harlan Fisk Stone Scholar from 1979-81 at Columbia Law School, and served as Editor-in-Chief of New York University School of Law’s Tax Law Review. Mr. Sklar is Of Counsel at our firm and is a member of the State Bar of New York as well as a certified public accountant.
