Ganfer Shore Leeds & Zauderer LLP ("GSLZ") is excited to announce that the Honorable O. Peter Sherwood (ret.) will be joining the firm as Senior Counsel, effective May 1, 2021. GSLZ is a boutique firm of approximately 30 attorneys that has specialized in commercial litigation and real estate matters since 1979.
Judge Sherwood, prior to his retirement from the bench, was a New York State Supreme Court Justice and served as one of the eight Justices of the Commercial Division in the Supreme Court, New York County. The Commercial Division is a highly regarded branch of the Court that handles complex commercial cases involving claims of more than $500,000. During his 13 years on the bench, Judge Sherwood handled complex business disputes including cases involving the Empire State Building initial public offering, residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS), and alleged violations of net neutrality, among hundreds of others. Prior to his judicial career, Judge Sherwood was a partner in a large national law firm where he handled complex commercial matters. He has served, among other positions, as Corporation Counsel of the City of New York, where he was the City's chief legal officer and oversaw a staff of 700 lawyers. He also served as Assistant Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., where he litigated precedent-setting civil rights cases, and as Solicitor General of the State of New York, overseeing appellate litigation on behalf of the State and State institutions.
Judge Sherwood's joining GSLZ will reunite him with his classmates Mark Zauderer and Steven Shore. All three were members of the New York University School of Law Class of 1971, which is celebrating its Fiftieth Reunion this spring. Steven Shore, the Managing Partner of GSLZ, recalled that he and Judge Sherwood sat next to each other during their first year of law school. Mr. Shore observed that this combination had been a long time coming and added that he is thrilled Judge Sherwood is joining GSLZ. Mr. Zauderer commented that since law school, he had worked with Judge Sherwood in various law-related organizations and activities, including currently serving as Co-Chairs of a subcommittee of the Commercial Division Advisory Council dealing with the Role of the Commercial Division in the Court System. All members of GSLZ echoed Mr. Shore's excitement at having Judge Sherwood join the firm.
