Networking in a Virtual World
Plan, Participate, and Pursue Relationships

There has been an abundance of virtual meetings, virtual webinars, virtual cocktail hours, etc. over the past few months. Virtual meetings provide opportunities to connect with those who we would otherwise be unable to see because of this pandemic – whether they are right down the street or across an ocean. As we navigate this new world of marketing and networking, it can be difficult to identify how to best capitalize on the connections made during these meetings. Consider this three-part approach when tackling networking in a virtual world: Plan, Participate, and Pursue Relationships.
Plan:
Before the event even begins start planning for success. Consider publishing your attendance pre-event on social media. Doing so alerts your colleagues and clients that you are attending an event on a topic that may be of interest to them. If you can provide a link to the event notice or registration, you are also acting as a resource for them to participate. Social media posts following events also identifies some of the benefits gained from attending the virtual meeting. Again, this is helpful not only to show your depth of knowledge of the subject matter, but if there is a playback feature you can link to, you will become a great resource for your colleagues and clients.
On the day of the event - come prepared. It is easy to sign up for a virtual meeting, show up, and just listen. To truly benefit from the marketing and networking opportunity, come to the event ready to engage. Start by reviewing the agenda. Prepare talking points if there is going to be an open discussion or breakout sessions. You should also take the time to review the attendee list, when possible, before the event. Identify and research those on the list you don’t already know. This approach will give you the opportunity to identify if a prospect does work in your jurisdiction or specialty area.
Participate:
Make the time for these events. Treat virtual meetings the same way you would an in-person event. Put it on your calendar. When you log into your virtual event, focus. It is easy to multi-task during these calls with so much technology at our fingertips. Capitalize on the marketing and networking opportunity. Take advantage of it.
Pursue Relationships:
Send a hand-written thank you note to the meeting organizers and presenters. If you are unable to get an address, and put pen to paper, a simple email will suffice. You should also send follow up emails to those who attended the meeting that you would like to stay connected with. It is also advantageous to send LinkedIn requests to those individuals. Finally, schedule a follow up on your calendar for 90 days out. This is a good way to maintain the relationship and keep them top of mind.
There are so many benefits gained from the transition to virtual marketing. It will always remain important, no matter how or when you are attending a marketing event, to plan, participate, and pursue relationships.
