September 25, 2018 – Portland, Maine – The Bennett Law Firm is pleased to announce that the American Bar Association Board of Elections has certified Peter Bennett as the Maine State Delegate to the ABA House of Delegates.
Established in 1936, the control and administration of the ABA is vested in the House of Delegates as the policy-making body of the association. The role of the State Delegate is extremely important to both the Association and to the ABA members in the state who have elected the State Delegate as their representative in the House. The State Delegate performs two important functions, serving as a member of the Nominating Committee, and chairing the state's delegation in the House. The House is currently comprised of 596 members who collectively represent, state and local bar associations, affiliated organizations, elected State Delegates, Delegate-at-Large members, leaders of the Association, and representatives from entities within the Association. Being a member of the House provides an opportunity to be directly involved in considering emerging issues of importance to the legal profession and to contribute to efforts to achieve an equal justice system for society.
Peter Bennett is a nationally recognized expert and advocate on issues related to the independence of the judiciary. He is currently a member of the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary, and Chair-Elect of the Board of Trustees of the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada, the nation’s leading institution for judicial education. He is a past member and Chair of the Association’s Standing Committee on Judicial Independence and a past Chair of the ABA’s Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section. Over the years, Bennett has been an advocate for bettering the judiciary through education and innovation. He was a leader when the American Bar Association’s House of Delegates adopted its policy on standards for judicial recusal, also known as when a judge must decline to hear a case, as well as in developing and adopting its policy on prevention of violence in the judicial system.
