Joseph (“J.R.”) Casillas was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was admitted to the Montana State Bar in 2008, and the U.S. District Court in 2009.

J.R. is a member of the Montana State Bar Association. While an undergraduate, he participated in intercollegiate athletics as a member of the Evergreen State College men’s basketball team in Olympia, Washington. During law school, he was a member of the Creighton University School of Law ABA Regional Negotiation Team which competed in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His practice emphasizes criminal and civil litigation in a wide variety of areas.
