Successful appellate litigation requires unique skills, including intimate knowledge of substantive law, the complex procedural rules of appellate courts and, of course, the ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally. The members of the Lewis Johs Appellate Practice Group have honed these skills during their more than 50 years combined experience in litigating appeals in New York State and federal courts. We have successfully handled hundreds of appeals on a wide variety of issues and have garnered a reputation for excellence in the field of appellate practice.
Additionally, our Appellate Practice Group is involved in multiple aspects of the cases litigated by our firm, including the preparation of motions for summary judgment, trial memoranda of law, motions in limine, requests to charge and post-trial motions. Our early involvement in cases enables us to shape the issues preserved for appellate review, a critical aspect of appellate practice. In addition to handling appeals for our private, corporate, municipal and insurance company clients, we are frequently retained as appellate counsel to other law firms to assist in the prosecution and defense of appellate issues during and after trial.
Our Appellate Practice Group is led by partner Robert J. Avallone and also includes Jason T. Katz, Robert Lifson (Former Justice, New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Second Department), Michael T. Colavecchio, Robert Cimino, Ann Kandel and Amy Bedell.
